SYMPTOM
When you try to e-mail a Point file, an error appears: "Unspecified failure has occurred" or "msmapi failure, valid session id does not exist". Outlook does not launch when sending an E-mail from Point.
CAUSE
- The default mail client is not set to Microsoft Outlook.
- The Outlook control file that launch email from other applications is not registered properly.
RESOLUTION
If you are unsure that you are on a 32-bit or 64-bit system follow these steps to verify your system type:
- Open an Explorer window.
- Right-click This PC and select Properties.
- In the System section, check the System Type:
Once you know your system type proceed to follow the appropriate set of instructions.
32-Bit Operating System
Check compatibility settings
- Close Point.
- Click the Windows Start icon and select Computer.
- Double-click Local Disk C:.
- Double-click the Winpoint folder.
- Right-click winpoint.exe and select Properties.
- Click the Compatibility Mode tab.
- Verify that Point and Outlook are running the same compatibility mode.
- Open Point and try to email again
Verify that you can e-mail from other applications
- Close Point.
- Open any Microsoft Word document.
- Select File > Send To > Mail Recipient (As Attachment).
If an error occurs or Microsoft Outlook does not open with the Word document attached, Outlook is preventing all applications from sending e-mail, including Point. Contact your network administrator to correct the issue.
Verify that Microsoft Outlook is set as the default mail client
- Click the Windows Start icon and select Control Panel.
2. Click Default Programs.
3. Select Set your default programs.
4. Select Outlook and click Set this program as the default.
5. Use the back arrow to return to the Control Panel.
6. Click Default Programs.
7. Select Set program access and computer defaults.
8. From the Set Program Access dialog box, select Custom and click the down arrow on the right.9. Select Microsoft Outlook from the Choose a default email program section.
10. Click OK and try to email from Point again.
Register Msmapi32.ocx
1. Click the Windows Start icon and select All Programs > Accessories.2. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run As Administrator.
If a security warning is displayed, click Allow.
3. From the Command Prompt window, enter chdir c:windowssystem32 and press <enter>.4. At the next parameter, enter regsvr32 msmapi32.ocx, and press <enter>.
A message that the file was registered successfully is displayed.
5. Open Point and try again.
64-Bit Operating System
Adjust compatibility settings
- Close Point.
- Right-click the Point icon.
- Select Properties.
- Click the Compatibility Mode tab.
- Clear the Run As Administrator check box and click OK.
Verify that you can e-mail from other applications
- Close Point.
- Open any Microsoft Word document.
- Select File > Send To > Mail Recipient (As Attachment).
If an error occurs or Microsoft Outlook does not open, then Outlook is preventing all application from sending email, including Point. Contact your network administrator to correct the issue.
